Note: This article is for school students (classes IX to XII)

In the articles on how to choose a career, your career in Indian context and which career is best, we have established the following:

  • Your career decision is the most important decision of your life
  • You need to devote time to this decision
  • You need to research career options and objectively analyse them (without bothering yourself with the struggle phase)
  • Your success is pertinent for development of India
  • There is no preferred career option, you have to be the best in whatever you choose

You have a journey to make and the most important factor which will determine your success is: your hard work and your dedication. This LakshyaWiki is an effort to guide you from now till the time you become an established professional. The only thing we hope is that when you become a professional you would contribute back to India either through Project Lakshya or through instituting even more innovative mechanisms to give back.

Be receptive

This is your life, your career and your decision. And it should be you who must care the most about it. You need to keep your eyes and ears open, you need to continuously assimilate information, analyse whatever new information you are assimilating and finally make a decision. The source of this information could be anything and anyone, the newspaper, the television, the Internet, your family, your relatives, your teachers, guests at your school, professional living in your neighbourhood, the District Magistrate of your city and even your co-passenger in the train. Whenever you find a professional at your disposal, it should become your duty to gain as much out of him or her as possible.

Your father or cousin brother might be in a profession which you do not want to get into. However, there might be someone else reading LakshyaWiki who can benefit immensely from thier experiences. Persuade people around you to visit this site and contribute to it. Remember to develop India we need every student whose parents can afford school to realise his/her potential and become “world’s best” in whatever they do.

Your career plan

When you feel you have analysed enough and you are ready to start working towards your career goal. Take a day off and on a piece of paper write responses to the following:

  1. Why I chose this particular career? List 10 other career options and against each, write why you feel your chosen option is better for you, than the other 10 options.
  2. What is considered “world’s best” in your chosen career? Write a satisfactory response, it could be a list of names, list of characteristics, whatever you feel is appropriate.
  3. What skills are needed to be “world’s best” in your chosen career? Categorise them as theoretical, practical and behavioural skills.
  4. Create a time bound career plan. Starting tomorrow till the time you enter your first job, how will you develop those skills, give equal emphasis on all three types of skills.

Then show this piece of paper to your parents, get their blessings and start working.

Way ahead

As time will pass and as you work hard on your time plan, you will learn more things which will require additions or deletions to your plan. Every year, just a day after your birthday, pull out your plan, see if you achieved what you planned and make an improved plan, always with the same objective in mind: to be “world’s best” in your chosen profession. Next you may want to go to index of pages and read about some career options.
