Our country
All of us are proud to be Indians and all of us love our motherland. Here is a reality check for you. Make a rough estimate of money spent on you every month. School fees, pocket money, clothes, movies, travel, books etc. Now imagine if you have to live your life with less than INR 1500 per month. This amount is possibly less than the price of clothes you are wearing. However, in our country - India, more than 500,000,000 people (40%) have to live with less than INR 1500 per month or INR 50 per day. 40% households cannot even get 3 meals a day; forget schools, clothes, movies, travel, books and the rest.
You were lucky
You will often observe children of your age, picking up garbage or working in a hotel. They are doing what they are doing not because they are any less talented then you, but simply because their parents can not provide them the education which your parents can. This person in front of you is poor and since this person is not receiving any good education; in all probability his or her children would again be poor. The important point is that just before you were born you had a 40% chance to be born to poor parents. Since your life had not even started you obviously did nothing good to deserve to be born in a rich family. You were just lucky.
Your debt
So the next time, you see a boy or girl of your age, picking up garbage or working in a hotel, do not pity him or her. Thank him/her. Remember there was a 40% possibility that you could be in his/her place. You enjoy the luxuries of life because someone else cries in pain all the time. Their pain is a debt on you, and to repay it you have to give back to the society more than what you are going to take from it.
The world has changed
There are poor people in every country of the world. However, in America the poor eat three meals a day, live in a house and can send their kids to school. Development is a relative term: India is developing relative to America. In the 1900s life was simple, countries existed in isolation. Here in India we had one car, one phone and one bank to choose from. However in the new century this has changed. Hyundai i20 is a Korean car, designed in Germany, produced in India and sold worldwide. Things have become much more complex now. If you imagine this as a race then in 1900s countries were running in their own tracks unaware of everyone else but now everyone runs on the same track. To develop now means to compete with every other country in the world. Developed countries have thier edge in resources and the only asset India has is you. Given the way the world around us has evolved, only way we can change from developing to being developed is when you become better than your counterpart in the developed world. Your goal is no longer to be best in your class or in your city or in your State or in India but it is to be best in the World. And, it is not just you. To develop a country of the size of India every student who has the opportunity to go to school has to become “world’s best” in whatever they pursue.
In summary
Born in a resource starved country where only a few are lucky to go to school, every aspect of poverty around you should remind you of the debt to our society, which you must repay. And given how the world has evolved you have to be “world’s best” in whatever you pursue as a career. Next you may want to read the following articles:
